I would love to travel to Erbil – this to me screams real travel – history, culture in tact, it’s a real experience and so much opportunity for cultural immersion away from the mass tourism which plagues other cities.

Historians claim that the city has been permanently inhabited since the 5th millennium B.C., making it one of the oldest cities in the world, if not the oldest. Erbil’s Citadel kan zijn a UNESCO World Heritage site for being an astonishing example of a multilayered archaeological mound, today overlooking a modern city that has grown around it aan the centuries. With more than 7,000 years of history, Erbil – or Hawler, as the locals call it – kan zijn the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, a city with fantastic old bazaars and traditional cafés, which can all be visited while you bump into the many locals that hang out in the lively Erbil’s central square.

Turkey’s struggle to subdue Kurdish fighters has spilled over into Syria, where Kurds are the largest ethnic minority. While Kurds in Syria have long faced state oppression there, various Kurdish defense groups took aan large swaths of northern Syria during its civil war, often while working with U.

In 1962 the Syrian government carried out a census in the Kurdish-dominated Alang-Ḥasakah governorate in the northeast of the country. Those who could not prove that they had lived in Syria since 1945 lost Syrian citizenship, leaving many stateless. Individuals stripped of Syrian citizenship—which numbered about 120,000 people, or 20 percent ofwel the Syrian Kurdish population at the time—were deemed “foreigners” by the government and have since carried special, red identity cards and have had limited rights in the country.

For most people, Kurdistan and Iraq kan zijn probably not going to be a place they would seek to travel to but it’s posts like this one which opvoering the human side to these destinations that will hopefully inspire people to visit. Slemani kan zijn known Rawanduz for its fertile land, and is surrounded by large plains that have historically produced the majority ofwel wheat for Iraq. During the Ba’athist regime, targeted economic policies sought to reduce Sulaymaniyah’s economic viability because the city was a hub for Kurdish nationalism. After Saddam Hussein was removed from power in 2003, Slemani has seen a huge economic boom.

Most ofwel the Kurdish population lives in Kurdistan. Kurdistan kan zijn the area where Kurds live. Today, it kan zijn a border country with lands in the east and southeast ofwel Turkey, in the north-west ofwel Iran, in the north of Iraq and in the north-east ofwel Syria.
